Mushroom House
Supporting Local Food Systems Through Sustainable Construction
Located in the Bwindi region of south-western Uganda, the Mushroom House demonstrateshow sustainable construction can support local food production and community livelihoods.
Built for a local foundation, the facility serves as a dedicated mushroom-growing centre thathelps strengthen local food systems while creating opportunities for income generation andskills development. The 75 m² building was constructed using CoolBricks earth masonry and locally sourced timber, combining low-carbon materials with practical agricultural infrastructure. Designed specifically for mushroom cultivation, the building provides a stable internal environment while minimising reliance on expensive imported materials and energy-intensive construction methods.
The project reflects CoolBricks' broader philosophy that buildings should do more than provide shelter. They can also support local economies, strengthen community resilienceand contribute to more regenerative forms of development. By combining sustainableconstruction with local food production, the Mushroom House creates value both duringconstruction and throughout its operational life.Beyond its role as a growing facility, the project serves as a demonstration of how locallyavailable materials can be used to create productive infrastructure that directly benefitssurrounding communities. It highlights the potential for earth-based construction to supportnot only housing, but also agriculture, entrepreneurship and rural development.
